How To Analyze Court Cards

Court cards represent the different personality types of people. People fall into a variety of personality types and exhibit characteristics that distinguish them from others. You’ve probably noticed this in everyday life. Some people are more fun-loving than others, some more serious, others tend to be loners or dreamers.

In tarot the court cards are used to symbolize these different types of people. There are sixteen court cards - the King, Queen, Knight and Page in each suit. Each card’s qualities are a combination of 1) its suit and 2) its rank. Let’s have a look at the four different personalities represented by the court cards.

1) The King – The King of Wands embodies creative, inspiring, forceful, charismatic and bold qualities. These are its positive traits and people with this personality are active and extrovert. Such people use their personality to influence the world. The King court cards are lively and directive.

2) The Queen – The Queen of Wands embodies endearing, wholehearted, energetic, cheerful and self-assured qualities. Queen personalities are lively and positive. However, in contrast to the King, the Queen will not force these qualities in an extrovert way. Instead people with this personality type will express these qualities from inside themselves. These court cards are powerful but not directive.

3) The Knight – People who embody the personality of the Knight are extreme in their nature. They go all out to express their feelings and push boundaries with their unique qualities. This can be expressed both positively and negatively. How the court cards will be expressed is usually influenced by the circumstances.

The Knight of Pentacles can be conservative and tends to be mistrusting. He or she will check everything twice and will not commit to anything unless he feels sure that the situation can be trusted. This court card is not very adventurous. So these court cards can be either cautious (positive) or unadventurous (negative).

4) Pages – The page is like a happy child. These court cards express their wonder and exuberance about what they do and see. They will want to involve us in the things they enjoy. The Page of Swords will find intellectual and mental pursuits very stimulating.

The page expresses the willpower and courage to get involved in anything and everything. The qualities of these court cards are spontaneous and such people are unafraid to seize opportunities. The Page of Cups is will encourage you not to miss out on opportunities as they come you way.

In tarot the court cards may represent people of a certain age and life circumstance. The Queen of Swords may be a divorced woman, for example. Some people find this type of link to be inhibiting as specific traits should never be limited to one type of person. So the King card may be relevant to a woman even though its traits are masculine.

In the same way the Page court card does not always have to apply to a child. When court cards appear during a reading it will indicate a specific approach to life. But it will also show you how this approach could be influencing your situation. This could show up in a number of ways.

Court cards could reveal and aspect of your personality that is being expressed or it could be showing you a side that is being repressed. It may show you that you are denying this aspect or actively expressing it. The truth can be revealed by the other cards in the spread. Court cards can also represent other people, even those you have not yet met.
